BUIKWE FULL GOSPEL CHURCH

Supporting Community Development

SEE HOW FAR WE HAVE COME!

Buikwe Full Gospel Church is is a Pentecostal Christian local community church located in Buikwe, Uganda (East Africa). The church is a member of the Full Gospel Churches of Uganda. Its history ranges back to 1960s.

History of the Full Gospel Churches of Uganda

In the year 1955; the Glad Tidings received a Prophetic call during a weeknight service to take the Gospel of power to Uganda. However, The British Governor of Uganda denied them permission to enter the country to do the missions work because the religious leaders of that time did not want Pentecostals in Uganda.

Nevertheless, believing that this was a call from God, the church began to pray fervently for Divine intervention and in December 1956, Hugh and Audrey Layzell were sent to Kenya to work temporarily with the Elim missionaries of New York until the door to Uganda would open.

God was at work to fulfil his purpose. Hence in May 1960 Glad Tidings Missionary Society received a permit to do mission work in Uganda.

The Gospel Mission to Uganda which birthed The Full Gospel Churches of Uganda was then incorporated under the Unlimited Companies Act in October 1960 and became the first Pentecostal mission or church to be granted legal status in Uganda.

Today, The Full Gospel Churches of Uganda has over 1600 churches country-wide with its headquarters at Makerere Hill Road plot number 55-59 where Full Gospel Church Makerere – the mother church is situated.

Buikwe Full Gospel Church also emerged from the full gospel churches that were planted in several villages of Buganda. The church was established at Buikwe, a trading center located between Jinja town and Lugazi town via Metha sugar plantations.

The church was administered by Pastor ClareTwalabekyo from 1960 to early 1980s. From 1986 to 2000 the church was under the administration of Pastor David Sentamu who passed away in 2000 and later after his death was succeeded by his son Joab Mwebya Wilbur.

Buikwe Full Gospel Church is rated as a center of righteousness promoting holiness basing on God's word-Bible, upholding purity of means to justify the end. Many pentecostal churches and their leaders around Buikwe are nurtured through Buikwe Full Gospel Church.

In 2007 Pastor Joab Mwebya Wilbur teamed up with Bro. Kitya Kenneth to change the poor image of the church to a prosperous one. Bro. Kitya Kenneth discussed this issue with his old time friend, Mugoya Michael, who was by then a development worker with a Kampala based NGO called NICRAD. Mugoya Michael agreed to team up with Bro. Kitya Kenneth and Pastor Joab Mwebya Wilbur to transform Buikwe Full Gospel Church to a contemporary standard (I Samuel 22:2).

Mugoya Michael left his full time job and volunteered to design  income generating projects for the Church. The church members (many who had suffered under abject poverty over the years) were mobilized to come up with their own individual project and business ideas. With technical assistance from the Network for Integrated Community Based Research and Development (NICRAD) Mugoya designed and developed member project ideas into concept notes and into full proposals.

Members were trained through continued workshops to form community development groups that would be registered to implement their respective projects. Their community projects were later published on the internet via Ning  to create awareness worldwide.

The church's core values were also modified to fit in the new system. Currently, Buikwe Full Gospel Church believes in engaging the community where the Christian lives. This is done by ministering to the total Man: spirit, soul, and Body.
